synopsis

Paris, 1960. Michel is about to leave for Algeria to do his military service. In the meantime, he works as a stagehand at television, which allows him to make girls believe he is a star. This is how he seduces Juliette and Liliane, two inseparable friends…

Adieu Philippine

It’s a film that belongs to its historical moment but also reflects it from the outside like a magnifying mirror – and these qualities suggest the manifold, elusive nature of Rozier’s art.

synopsis

After being away for around ten years, François returns to his home village. But once he arrives, many things have changed: the friendly atmosphere has vanished, and his friend Serge has become an alcoholic.

With his cinematographer Henri Decae, Chabrol succeeded in capturing the detestable conditions of a particular backwater of regional France. We’ve all seen such places: the squalor; the quite unbelievably casual attitude toward such imponderables as incest; the occluded horizons. Chabrol’s characteristic themes were already evident in Le Beau Serge.

synopsis

Paris, 1912. Jules, a German, and Jim, a Frenchman, become inseparable friends. They both fall in love with Catherine, but she marries Jules…

Georges Sadoul

One of those rare films that knows how fast audiences can think, and how emotions contain their own explanations.

Chen Wing Yan, a policeman, successfully infiltrates a gang while Lau Kin Ming, a triad member, becomes a mole in the police force. However, things turn into a race against the clock when both must seek each other out.

Infernal Affairs

Two of Hong Kong cinema’s most iconic leading men, Tony Leung and Andy Lau, face off in the breathtaking thriller that revitalized the city-state’s twenty-first-century film industry, launched a blockbuster franchise, and inspired Martin Scorsese’s "The Departed". As the shifting loyalties, murky moral compromises, and deadly betrayals mount, Infernal Affairs raises haunting questions about what it means to live a double life, lost in a labyrinth of conflicting identities and allegiances.

Criterion

A gripping thriller with grandstanding drama, muscle-clenching suspense and two great action leads in Tony Leung and Andy Lau.

synopsis

Bringing together short films by François Truffaut, Agnès Varda and Jacques Rozier, this programme captures the free and inventive spirit of a generation on the cusp of the French New Wave. Shot in the South of France rather than Paris, the films already experiment with form, blending playful storytelling, a lightness of tone, and breaks from the conventions of classical cinema.

A short film lesson for young cinephiles: discovering the French New Wave
The screening is preceded by an introduction (in French) to help understand the French New Wave, the movement that revolutionised French cinema in the late 1950s. A simple and engaging guide to better appreciate The 400 Blows.

Casting of Jean-Pierre Léaud for The 400 Blows

synopsis

A widowed single mother gains custody of her son, an impulsive and violent teenager with ADHD. Amid their outbursts and struggles, they try to make ends meet, notably with the unexpected help of their enigmatic neighbor across the street, Kyla. Together, the three of them find a fragile sense of balance, and soon, hope.

synopsis

A young advertising executive travels to the remote Quebec countryside for a funeral, only to discover that no one there knows his name or the nature of his relationship with the deceased. When the deceased’s older brother forces him into a disturbing role-playing scheme designed to protect his mother and the family’s honor, a toxic relationship begins... one that will not end until the truth finally comes to light.

France Info Culture

Made of equal parts mourning and melancholy, mystery, and possibly madness, the striking "Tom at the Farm" showcases Dolan’s abundant talents at turning seemingly simple material into a taut, tough film.

Indiewire

Tom à la ferme

It’s taut, creepy, compelling and sexy. And, apart from the location, it’s very much a Dolan film, focused on people testing the limits of their love for each other – and themselves.

synopsis

A remarkable thriller that explores the paranoia of a country due to the omnipresent nature of its government while also being a compelling domestic drama driven by the strength of its characters. The fact that we, the viewers, are as intrusive to the life of these people as the dreaded ‘ear’ makes for an interesting voyeuristic experience that’s hard to look away from.

Czech Film Review

The Ear

Suppressed as soon as production finished, Karel Kachyna's "The Ear" now resurfaces in a glorious 4K restoration. Prochazka’s dramatic masterstroke was to stage much of the film in the presumably grace-and-favour house that Ludvik shares with his wife, and to have as many thematic nods to Edward Albee's "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" as to the universe of Franz Kafka. It remains a brilliant analysis of how political power is maintained and enforced – and not just in a totalitarian situation.
