Why we preserve

By preserving these archives, we safeguard cinema’s legacy for future generations.

Every film we preserve bears historical, artistic, and cultural significance.

Our collections span genres, eras, and cultures, from silent films to contemporary works.

They offer a window into the evolution of cinematic techniques, styles, and practices worldwide.

Millions of kilometers of film, thousands of prints, and tens of thousands of images and objects together create a vibrant memory — one of the City of Luxembourg’s cultural treasures.

How we preserve

The Cinémathèque’s archives are housed at the Cloche d’Or, in specially designed facilities that safeguard their longevity.

Every item is carefully preserved under strict conditions: a steady temperature of about 6 °C, humidity maintained at 40 %, and continuous monitoring with advanced systems.

Films are kept refrigerated to slow their decay, while posters, photographs, and technical objects are meticulously catalogued, organized, and protected. Each item is recorded in specialized databases.

The Cinémathèque works closely with national and international partners from FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) to share expertise and prints, helping to circulate and preserve cinematic heritage.
