Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg

Renovation of the Cinémathèque

Our beloved cinema on Place du Théâtre closed in September 2025 for extensive renovations. Led by the City of Luxembourg in partnership with Fabeck Architects, the renovation is designed to preserve the character of the historic building while bringing it up to the standards of a modern 21st-century cinema.

Why a Renovation

The Cinémathèque is a cherished historic building, but its facilities have aged and no longer meet modern standards of comfort, safety, functionality, and accessibility.

Renovations planned from 2026 to 2029 aim to provide all visitors with a high-quality experience.

Key goals include improving accessibility for people with reduced mobility, upgrading safety and comfort, modernizing technical equipment, and optimizing the spaces to better welcome audiences.

New locations, same great films!

While the renovations are underway, the Cinémathèque’s screenings will be hosted at several locations around the city, including the Théâtre des Capucins and the Cercle Cité.

Each month, depending on availability, audiences can continue to enjoy their favourites — Cinema Paradiso, Afternoon Adventures, Great Restorations, Comedy Classics, and many more surprises.

After all, the Cinémathèque is more than just a cinema building…
