synopsis

The life of a man who preys on unsuspecting women for a living is changed when he finds an accomplice in the woman who loves and controls him.

Deep Crimson

"Deep Crimson", macabre and perverse, is based on a true story from the 1940s, about the ‘Lonely Hearts Killers’ – a couple who posed as brother and sister, victimized lonely widows and then killed them. Their story was told in a 1970 American film, "The Honeymoon Killers" by Leonard Kastle, but now here is Arturo Ripstein with a Mexican version that combines black comedy with horrifying heartlessness.

Roger Ebert

Ripstein loses Kastle’s overt satire and shoestring aesthetic, but the satirical underpinnings remain. A former assistant to Luis Buñuel and an impressive stylist even when budgetary restrictions have clearly limited him to a handful of sets, Ripstein uses Cacho’s seduction of a variety of women – from an aging alcoholic floozy to a widow made gullible by her piety – to cast a suspicious eye at several strata of Mexican society.

synopsis

In 11th-century Japan, a samurai is found dead. Four conflicting accounts are given by a woodcutter, a bandit, the samurai’s wife, and the samurai’s spirit, summoned by a medium. Each tells a different version of the crime – but is anyone telling the truth?

"Rashomon" is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Four people give different accounts of a man’s murder, which director Akira Kurosawa presents with striking imagery and an ingenious use of flashbacks. This eloquent masterwork and international sensation revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema – and a commanding new star by the name of Toshiro Mifune – to the Western world.

Criterion Collection

Rashomon

"Rashomon" changed how we perceive film as well as human behavior. For us subjective creatures, the truth is constantly elusive.

Alan Rudolph

Every element in the film, from the dense thicket of forest branches to master cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa’s deceptive framing and lighting design, is precisely calibrated to make the facts more difficult to discern.

Duration :

Actors :

synopsis

Cléo, a popular and beautiful singer, is waiting for the results of a medical test. She fears she may have cancer. From superstition to fear, from the Rue de Rivoli to the Café du Dôme, from vanity to anxiety, from her home to Parc Montsouris, Cléo lives through ninety extraordinary minutes…

Quietly touching and profound, it epitomises the youthful delight Varda always shows for the tools at her disposal and her sensitive and easeful way of expressing the sways and shifts of life, love and desire.

Jacques Rivette

synopsis

Anne joins a theatre troupe whose one of members has just committed suicide. A friend reveals to her the terrible secret behind the young man’s death.

Trois Couleurs

Rivette’s tightly wound images turn the ornate architecture of Paris into a labyrinth of intimate entanglements and apocalyptic menace; he evokes the fearsome mysteries beneath the surface of life and the enticing illusions that its masterminds, whether human or divine, create.

synopsis

A movie fan becomes the housekeeper for a famous actor, blurring the line between admiration and obsession. As she immerses herself in his world and he takes her more than for granted, her life and boundaries begin to unravel.

Have you ever loved someone so deeply that you lost yourself in the process? This unspoken question haunts every frame of "Bona", a film that forces the audience to confront the raw, often uncomfortable realities of devotion. Originally released in 1980, the film holds a mirror to a society tangled in its contradictions, its obsessions, and its relentless class struggles.

synopsis

In the same hotel as Bad Living, several guests reveal their own tangled relationships, quiet frustrations, and emotional breakdowns. Across intersecting stories, the film exposes how seemingly ordinary interactions mask deeper loneliness, resentment, and the fragile facades people maintain in intimate relationships.

The Berlinale’s decision to programme "Bad Living" in Competition first and then "Living Bad" in the Encounters section feels random as the two films could easily be viewed the other way round. Both are finely gauged works of art that comment on and feed off one another.

synopsis

This is the story of Godard shooting Breathless, told in the style and spirit of Godard shooting Breathless.

The film reminds you that the real salvation of cinema will always come from those who understand that making a movie should be a magic trick good enough to fool the magician himself into believing it.
