Nora can hardly believe her eyes when her father shows up at her mother’s funeral. After all, he’d abandoned their family years ago, something Nora has never forgiven him for. Thus she’s all the more surprised when this once celebrated director offers her the lead role in his latest film.
Forgiveness is an act, while mercy is a performance. The distinction between the two may be subtle, but through the extraordinary grace of Trier’s filmmaking, which here revels in the transmutational power of filmmaking itself, Sentimental Value renders it larger than life.

Between Feierdeeg Screenings
What begins as a minor accident sets in motion a series of escalating consequences.
There are no wasted shots and no squandered moments in this picture because it understands that cinema is life, imbued with the power to rediscover the past, to protect the present, and to imagine a future.

It Was Just an Accident is far from a concession to the ruling regime in Iran. If anything, it’s the opposite: a taut, intricately crafted drama about the traumas suffered by political dissidents and other opponents of power, whether they’re renowned directors like himself or just regular working-class citizens.

Great Restorations
Frank is a heroin dealer in Copenhagen. When he decides to up the ante, Frank goes to Milo, a drug lord – except he doesn’t have enough money to pay for the heroin. So Milo agrees to front him the goods as long as he repays immediately. But when the police arrive, Frank has to ditch the drugs, and he must find a way to repay Milo if he wants to live.
There’s something rotten in Denmark, as Mean Streets meets Goodfellas in Copenhagen. This striking, powerfully gritty tale about a week in the life of a drug dealer is well worth seeing. A promising debut.
Total Film
Begins as a fairly standard ’90s crime saga, almost an open imitation of Quentin Tarantino… But something happens on the way to the film’s haunting and ambiguous conclusion.
Salon
As botched-drug-deal tales go, Pusher digs surprisingly deep – its surface clichés give way to an existential despair that finally swallows the movie whole.

Guillermo's Ghost
When Carlos, a 12-year-old boy, is admitted to an orphanage after the execution of his father, a Republican, in 1939 Spain, he makes a horrid discovery by lifting the veil on the tragic secrets of the school.
Ghosts are more interesting when they have their reasons. They should have unfinished affairs of the heart or soul. The Devil’s Backbone, a mournful and beautiful new ghost story by Guillermo del Toro, understands that most ghosts are sad, and are attempting not to frighten us but to urgently communicate something that must be known so that they can rest.
Roger Ebert
This is not a good advert for Hollywood. Del Toro's poised and poignant ghost story contains more substance and is executed with more style than a half dozen Hollywood monster movies.

Cinematic Siblings
Teenagers Paul Bäumer and his friends Albert and Müller voluntarily enlist in the German army at the start of WWI, riding a wave of patriotic fervour that dissipates once they face the brutal realities of the front. Paul’s preconceptions about the enemy and the rights and wrongs of the conflict start to crumble…
A film that feels both aesthetically dazzling and full of necessary truths: an antiwar drama that transcends the bombast of propaganda because it’s so artfully and indelibly made.
Entertainment Weekly
