synopsis

Bahram, a 40-year old Iranian filmmaker, has never seen his films screened in his own country because of the censorship imposed by the Ministry of Culture. When his last project his censored once again, he decides to organize a clandestine screening with his intrepid producer.

Asgari once again tackles the innate contradictions embedded within oppressive systems, this time turning to the world of filmmaking, further thematically complicated by the metafictional involvement of several cinematic collaborators from "Terrestrial Verses".

Cineuropa

The picture has a scrappy, off-the-cuff energy and an impish, defiant spirit. It makes a persuasive case that art – and laughter – are potent weapons in the struggle against oppression.

synopsis

In 2093, aspiring filmmaker Kuve shoots a documentary about the Great War of the 2070s, which brought an end to modern technologies and led to the rebirth of kingdoms. In Umata, he discovers a village that has found peace.

Swiss-Kenyan filmmaker Damien Hauser creates a film full of inventiveness, a mix between sci-fi, romance and mockumentary that reflects on the use of AI in cinema in a futuristic Africa.

synopsis

Seeds follows Black farmers in the rural American South through the slow rhythms of planting, harvesting, and repair. Across seasons, families fight to maintain generational farms under financial pressure, where work, land, and memory remain tightly bound.

There is no part of "Seeds" that doesn’t feel like a priceless heirloom, like a window into a critical cultural history that must be maintained or lest be permanently lost

synopsis

One night, Rita is abducted by a man who insists that she is Szilvi, his missing sister. Forced to assume this role within an entire family, she is locked inside a bleak apartment and forbidden from leaving.

With its seemingly innocuous ‘fantastic film’ angle, Feels Like Home is still able to ask a very pertinent question: even when you know that horrors are sitting right before you, just how much are you willing to look away when you know you’ll be safe and sound if you do ?

synopsis

In late 1990s New York, Lucas, an undercover police officer is assigned to trap and arrest gay men. When he falls in love with one of his targets, Lucas finds himself torn between duty and desire.

Driven by compelling performances by Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey, Plainclothes has considerable emotional fire. Whenever they’re onscreen together, Plainclothes blisters with voracious lust for life that snuffs out the pensive melancholy that nearly suffocates them when they’re alone.

synopsis

Following his father’s death, Anand, a thirty-year-old city dweller, returns to his native village in Maharashtra to spend a ten-day mourning period. Surrounded by insistent relatives, he is forced to face questions about his marital status.

In less assured hands, "Cactus Pears" might have edged into trite territory, yielding to the familiar beats of trauma-laden queer love stories, but Kanawade’s considered direction and spare storytelling keep the narrative refreshing.

synopsis

Thirty years after leaving Bulgaria, art curator Mihail is sent back to assess child prodigy Nina's work. Meeting her reminds him of his daughter at the same age when they emigrated, forcing him to confront his past.

Nina Roza is a carefully-observed drama about the weight of the past and the pull of home. Geneviève Dulude-De Celles' intimate character study of a man in self-imposed exile is anchored by Galin Stoev's remarkable performance as Mihail, weaving art and memory into a poignant exploration of identity and belonging.

synopsis

In a fishing village in Cornwall, hope has long vanished... until the morning a boat appears in the old harbor. The Rose of Nevada, lost at sea with its entire crew three decades earlier, has mysteriously returned.

Matching the lightning-in-a-bottle domestic success of Bait might be a tall order, though either way, the film seals its one-man-band creator as a distinctive, now eminently recognizable arthouse voice.

Variety

Seen from the vantage point of our hyper-digital 2020s, Jenkin isn’t just a stark outlier from the current media regime. He’s also among the very few working directors whose cinema feels both familiar and viscerally new.

synopsis

To obtain a scholarship, Marina must retrieve a civil status document that only her biological family can provide. The young girl travels to Vigo, Galicia, where her parents came from, to meet a whole part of her family.

Like on every pilgrimage, doubt and hope go hand in hand, but this "Romería" glows with so much warmth that it may well be the most heartfelt homecoming of the year.
