synopsis

A carefree playboy causes the death of a renowned doctor. Tormented by guilt, he tries to atone by helping the widow of the deceased, gradually discovering the meaning of sacrifice... and risking falling in love with her.

Magnificent Obsession

A major turning point in Sirk’s career: its success led directly to the string of late masterpieces that includes All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life. "Magnificent Obsession" stands out for its uniquely over-the-top plotline, and the outrageousness seems to have prompted a corresponding vigor in Sirk’s direction. Instead of toning down the emotional extremes, he allows their full and somewhat demented force to emerge.

synopsis

Jonathan Demme’s landmark concert film captures Talking Heads at their peak. Shot in Hollywood during their 1983 tour, it builds from a solitary David Byrne into a full-force ensemble whose blend of art rock, funk, and new wave turns music into performance art.

The movie is the finest imaginable version of the Talking Heads’ "Speaking in Tongues" tour.

synopsis

Grace and Jackson move to a secluded house near his family in rural Montana, where Grace hopes to pursue her writing before falling pregnant. Often left alone with the baby while Jackson travels for work, their relationship begins to buckle under strain and her behaviour becomes increasingly erratic.

A darkly funny, highly disturbing psychological domestic freakout... Lawrence is a consistently skilled actor and the film has her delivering arguably a career-best performance. What the actress does here is feral and primal. Raw, hilarious, and unsettling.

synopsis

In 1980s Scotland, John Davidson is diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome when the condition was widely misunderstood. Facing bullying and isolation, he gradually turns his struggle for acceptance into advocacy, helping others for awareness.

It will make you cry, it will make you uncomfortable, but at the end of the film's runtime, it will leave you with a feeling of profound satisfaction that even the most heartfelt movies struggle to replicate.

synopsis

A hen escapes from an industrial farm and takes refuge in a rundown Greek tavern by the sea. As she adjusts to her new life, she unwillingly becomes a witness to the worst aspects of humanity.

Tour de force de mise en scène soutenu par l’agilité du directeur de la photographie Giorgos Karvelas, Hen est une œuvre souvent drôle, jouant beaucoup avec l’excellente musique composée par Szőke Szabolcs.

synopsis

Johan, a reed cutter, discovers the body of a young girl in his marshes. Racked with guilt, he investigates while caring for his granddaughter. Within his close-knit community, he quickly becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind the crime.

Jouant des codes du film noir policier avec un zest de fantastique et des effluves de psychologie des profondeurs, Sven Bresser sème à merveille le doute et tire le meilleur parti de la géographie dans laquelle s’inscrit son histoire.

synopsis

Within an apparently perfect family, the balance is disrupted when 12-year-old Marielle suddenly develops telepathic powers and hears everything her parents say and do, even when they are not around.

À chaque rebondissement, toujours bien senti, on ne peut s’empêcher de sourire, projetant sans doute notre propre lâcheté derrière les agissements du père, comme son envie de liberté derrière le comportement de la mère.

An intriguing experiment in recovering the moment-by-moment reality of a lost time and place.

synopsis

Niki, a piano tuner with an exceptionally acute sense of hearing, travels across New York with his mentor Harry to service instruments. His life is turned upside down when he realizes that his meticulous skills can also be applied to opening safes.

Anchored by a quiet yet compelling performance by Leo Woodall, the film gives a lovely late-career showcase to Dustin Hoffman. The mix of genre elements is a delight, and the jazzy score, fast pace, and strong performances make much of the film sing.

synopsis

Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are Hollywood’s silent film star couple. When the first talkie is released, they must adapt and shoot their first film in the new format…

Singin' in the Rain

With so many films dedicated to the agonies of filmmaking, Singin’ overflows with the pleasure of movie creation, stitching together references to Hollywood history with more alacrity than Tarantino. One of the highpoints of hoofin’ history but, more importantly, an unadulterated joy.
