synopsis
Un playboy insouciant cause la mort d’un médecin renommé. Rongé par la culpabilité, il tente de se racheter en aidant la veuve du défunt, decouvrant peu à peu le sens du sacrifice et risquant de tomber amoureux d’elle.
A major turning point in Sirk’s career: its success led directly to the string of late masterpieces that includes "All That Heaven Allows", "Written on the Wind" and "Imitation of Life". "Magnificent Obsession" stands out for its uniquely over-the-top plotline, and the outrageousness seems to have prompted a corresponding vigor in Sirk’s direction. Instead of toning down the emotional extremes, he allows their full and somewhat demented force to emerge.
