synopsis

Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate, is unsure what to do with his future when he meets Mrs. Robinson, his father’s boss’s wife. The older woman sets out to seduce him and succeeds quickly. But things get complicated when Mr. Robinson asks Benjamin to date Elaine, his daughter…

The year 1967 was significant in cinema history, and if you’re trying to make sense of why, you don’t have to look much further than Mike Nichols’ "The Graduate". It is a film which appears at a great turning point in Hollywood film history, at the moments of transition between one era tied to the strictures of classical storytelling and codes self-imposed censorship, and the beginning of a new American perspective on film influenced by artistic innovations from the cinema of Europe.

📕 Based on the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by Shakespeare

synopsis

Verona Beach, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, is the stage for the hatred between two rival families: the Montagues and the Capulets…

Luhrmann’s gleefully cinematic version of the play is so relentlessly inventive and innovative, it takes 20 minutes to get a grasp on how appropriate his approach to the material is. Bravely (but sensibly) sticking with the original dialogue, he makes the central element of his audacious adaptation sheer visual : as the camera races wildly around, or rests on luminous close-ups and ornate tableaux, the striking sets, costumes, characters, the colours and compositions serve perfectly to evoke the forces of wealth and poverty, love and hate, power and pride, prejudice and superstition.

Time Out Film Guide

Romeo + Juliet

Amid the clamor from outraged purists and Shakespeare spinning in his Stratford-on-Avon, England, grave, you should notice that Luhrmann and his two bright angels have shaken up a 400-year-old play without losing its touching, poetic innocence.

synopsis

Although a billionaire, Thomas Crown is at heart an enemy of the system. He enjoys pulling off lucrative heists, until the day his path crosses that of a private detective…

The Thomas Crown Affair

synopsis

Max Bialystock is a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer facing financial difficulties. His accountant then makes him realize that a commercial flop could turn out to be more profitable than a hit…

Hilarious and irreverent, Brooks’ first film has the good fortune to be graced with the comic genius of Mostel, Wilder, and Shawn.

Austin Chronicle

Each time I’ve watched it, The Producers has felt horribly pertinent to the present moment. One year, I found it a poignantly contemporary paean to postmodern irony; another year, it was an agonisingly topical satire of the American dream and success uber alles.

synopsis

My Dinner with André

This is a bizarre and surprisingly entertaining satirical comedy ‒ the story of the search beyond theatre turned into theatre, or, at least, into a movie.

synopsis

A Broadway director turns a young actress into a star and marries her. But after three years of marital failure, she leaves for Hollywood. Until the day they meet again on a train…

synopsis

A young Parisian woman discovers that her husband has been murdered and that he hid $250,000 during the war. Three men pursue her, but she is aided by an enigmatic and charming adventurer…

"Charade" presents us with a temporary entry into that brighter place, into the possibility of adventure, the vicarious possession of beauty. Acted by two Europeans in a mythic, dangerous, beguiling Paris, it remains a quintessential Hollywood film...

synopsis

A cheerful, music-loving young governess arrives at the home of a stern widower to care for his seven children. Gradually, she transforms the household with her joy and love of music, winning the father’s heart and bringing a renewed sense of life and happiness to the family.

The Sound of Music

The 20th-Fox release will be one of the movies’ all-time hits, one of the all-time great pictures. It restores your faith in movies. If you sit quietly and let it take, it may also restore your faith in humanity. It does this with infectious wit, with consistent gaiety, with simple and realistic spirituality, with romance of heartbreak and heartmend. This is set against the most beautiful scenery you have seen in your life. "The Sound of Music" is quite a picture.

synopsis

Five high school students with completely opposite personalities end up in detention on a Saturday afternoon. As the day goes on, they talk, clash, and eventually discover more in common than they expected.

From the neon-sign opening titles to the derivative angst of the dialogue, it’s a touchstone of ‘80s pop culture, and a schizophrenic one, too.

synopsis

In a dystopian Los Angeles, former police officer Rick Deckard is reactivated to hunt and eliminate “replicants,” androids almost indistinguishable from humans who have rebelled and fled to Earth. During his pursuit, Deckard meets Rachel, a replicant with implanted memories, and a complex relationship develops between them.

The best reason to seek out "The Final Cut" on the biggest screen you can find, is the near miraculously improved quality of the print. Scanned frame by frame at ultra-high resolutions, the film looks utterly stunning. From Scott and ‘visual futurist’ Syd Mead’s tiny details, such as the funky novelty umbrellas with their neon stems, to jaw-dropping vistas like the opening, firebelching cityscape, it remains an unparalleled visual achievement.
