synopsis

At his request, Philip Marlowe urgently escorts his friend Terry Lennox to the Mexican border. But upon returning to Los Angeles, he is arrested for complicity in murder: Terry’s wife has been murdered…

The Long Goodbye

An ice-cold noir that retains Robert Altman's idiosyncratic sensibilities, The Long Goodbye ranks among the smartest and most satisfying Marlowe mysteries.

synopsis

Cassie, a former medical student, works in a café. But her life is not what it seems. When night falls, the thirty-something leads a double life…

Visuel : Promising Young Woman

There’s no denying that Fennell is playing with dynamite here, and knows it; the brashness of her approach and style is welcome, and her work is often riotously funny (especially when edging into darker territory).

synopsis

A teenager bullied by his classmates befriends a martial arts master. By his side, he learns about life and the right techniques to take down his cruel rivals.

Visuel : The Karate Kid

John G. Avildsen is back in the Rocky ring with The Karate Kid. More precisely, it is a Rocky for kids. Morita is simply terrific, bringing the appropriate authority and wisdom to the part.

Variety

While this may be as soppy and predictable as they come, it still reminds you why you used to enjoy ’80s teen flicks so much in the first place.

synopsis

Led by Varla, three young women set out on a sports car road trip. Along the way, they encounter a naive young couple, whom Varla does not hesitate to provoke.

Nicolas Winding Refn

Visuel : Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

What attracts audiences is not sex and not really violence, either, but a Pop Art fantasy image of powerful women, filmed with high energy and exaggerated in a way that seems bizarre and unnatural, until you realize Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal play more or less the same characters. Without the bras, of course.

synopsis

During a cruise, Terry, a former cabaret singer, falls in love with Michel, a confirmed bachelor. They agree to meet again six months later, on July 1st at 5 p.m., on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building in New York…

Visuel : Love Affair

One of those beautiful romantic comedies which take you in directions you would have never expected.

synopsis

A group of young summer camp counselors attempt to reopen a summer camp abandoned after a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious and relentless killer.

This is the original movie, the ancestral prequel or origin myth machinetooled to create a franchise, that readies the noisome and mostly offscreen figure of Jason Voorhees as an almost supernatural surviving villain of the future series.

synopsis

On the occasion of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports the disappearance of his wife, Amy. Under pressure from the police and amid media frenzy, the image of the model couple begins to crumble…

Gone Girl

Not only brutal but also brutally funny, Gone Girl mixes top-notch suspenseful storytelling with the kind of razor-edged wit that slashes so quick and clean you’re still watching the blade go past before you notice you’re bleeding.

The Wrap

Fincher proves himself yet again to be a better cinematic psychologist of (in-)human nature than almost any other director alive.

synopsis

Lucy and Barkley Cooper announce to their children that they risk losing their house. Each child has a good reason to avoid paying the bill, and in the end, Lucy and Barkley have to live separately with their children. The living arrangements quickly become difficult.

Make Way for Tomorrow

It would make a stone cry.

Orson Welles

A nearly-forgotten American film made in the Depression. The great final arc of Make Way for Tomorrow is beautiful and heartbreaking. It’s easy to imagine it being sentimentalized by a studio executive, being made more upbeat for the audience. That’s not McCarey.

synopsis

Thanks to a mad scientist’s machine, young Marty travels back in time to save his parents’ marriage…
