synopsis
In memoriam Claudia Cardinale
In 1860, as Sicily is swept up in the upheavals led by Garibaldi and his Red Shirts, Prince Salina travels with his entire family to their estate in Donnafugata. Foreseeing the decline of the aristocracy, he consents to a mismatched union, marrying his nephew Tancredi to the mayor’s daughter — a symbol of the rising social class.
Le génie de Visconti s’applique au moindre détail et confère à son film une dimension à la fois opératique et vériste. Ce chef-d’oeuvre aux proportions gigantesques est avant tout un tableau intimiste, et intime.
