City Open Air Cinema 2026

This summer, the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg celebrated 40 years of cinema under the stars. From 23 to 28 July on Place Guillaume II, then from 6 to 8 August on Place Léon XIII in Bonnevoie, City Open Air Cinema brought audiences together to discover and rediscover films in the open air.

On Knuedler, six evenings explored the emotions and imaginative worlds of cinema: Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann, The NeverEnding Story by Wolfgang Petersen, Niagara by Henry Hathaway, Whiplash by Damien Chazelle and Little Miss Sunshine by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. An Open Air LIVE screening of The General, by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman, also invited audiences to experience the magic of silent cinema, with live piano accompaniment by Hughes Maréchal.

Following a visit to Pfaffenthal in 2025, the move to Bonnevoie opened a new chapter in this long history of screenings across the capital’s neighbourhoods. On Place Léon XIII, three films continued the journey: La Boum by Claude Pinoteau, Run Lola Run by Tom Tykwer and Roman Holiday by William Wyler; bringing first loves, a breathless race against time and a romantic escape to the screen.

Behind these evenings lie months of preparation and the dedication of many people. The Cinémathèque extends its thanks to its student crew, staff and projectionists, as well as everyone who contributed to this edition, from the early preparations to the final screenings.

These thanks also go to our audience, whose loyalty and enthusiasm give these summer gatherings their meaning. Since the first screenings in the courtyard of the Théâtre des Capucins in 1986, the locations have changed, but the spirit remains the same: coming together around the big screen and sharing a cinematic experience under the open sky.

A look back in pictures at this anniversary edition, both in front of the screen and behind the scenes.
