What remains of cinema in the 21st century? Where does it stand today? Is it still found in movie theatres, or has it migrated to streaming platforms, television series, video games and social media? Caught between heritage and constant reinvention, cinema now seems to be everywhere and nowhere at once.
For its 17th season, UniPop will revisit the major questions that have shaped the programme since its very first cycle, but this time through the lens of the present. Our points of reference are shifting: our relationship to reality has been transformed, formats are becoming increasingly hybrid, genres – and even the very notion of authorship – are being redefined, screens are multiplying, and mainstream culture is reshaping the way we see and tell stories. In the face of growing standardisation and the relentless flow of moving images, can cinema still innovate, surprise and challenge us?
A reloaded UniPop is on the horizon: a critical update exploring the imaginaries of the contemporary world. A season dedicated to understanding what is changing, what endures, and what cinema still has to say to audiences of every generation.
More information about Season 17 will be available in December 2026.
