João Canijo

Lauded Portuguese director João Canijo, known for his uncompromising, socially engaged cinema, passed away in January, leaving behind a legacy of films that delve deeply into the human condition.

Close to the Bone

His latest completed works, Bad Living and Living Bad, are companion pieces set within the same family-run hotel, where the claustrophobic space amplifies generational tensions and moral reckonings. Canijo carefully foregrounds the complexities of womanhood – care, resentment, solidarity, and inheritance – immersing viewers in an intimate world of conflict and emotional vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Centre Culturel Portugais – Camões
