Lino Brocka, widely regarded as the Philippines’ most famous filmmaker, created a body of work that is both intensely personal and profoundly political.
Openly queer in a conservative society, Brocka brought a unique sensitivity to the lives of marginalized and oppressed people, portraying characters whose struggles with poverty, desire, and social constraint are depicted with uncompromising realism even when his stories take a melodramatic turn or two. His films navigate the tension between individual longing and systemic injustice, exploring love, ambition and survival, and giving a voice to communities rarely seen on screen.
Working during and in the immediate aftermath of the brutal dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos (1965-1986), Brocka believed cinema should confront societal inequities head-on, and his stories consistently reflect the moral and emotional consequences of corruption, oppression, and marginalization. His cinematic legacy is distinctly Filipino and his influence on contemporary directors like Brillante Mendoza and Lav Diaz is unmistakable. But his films also remain universally resonant, their stories of human resilience and the complexity of the human experience both moving viewers and functioning as a call to arms for a fairer world.

L’un des chantiers les plus enthousiasmants des circuits de répertoire est le retour sur écran de l’œuvre de Lino Brocka (1939-1991), légende du cinéma philippin, dont on mesure toujours plus l’importance.
