Spencer Tracy takes over the double role in MGM’s lavish production. Made under the Production Code, it tones down the sexual frankness of its predecessor, turning the story towards repression, guilt and the battle between good and evil. Victor Fleming’s elaborate MGM adaptation of the Stevenson story has a distinctly Freudian tone, with Spencer Tracy’s repressed Victorian doctor discovering the thrill of unbridled sexuality (as kinky as the censors would allow) as he changes into the louche Mr. Hyde.
