Film lecture "Iranian cinema. Between repression and international recognition” by Viviane Thill (film critic) | film excerpts | about 90' | in French

synopsis

Since 1979, Iran has used cinema as a tool for educating people in Islamic values. Gradually, a system developed in which an official film industry and a “festival cinema” evolved in parallel, with the latter often censored in Iran. From the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad onwards, tensions increased, and some filmmakers defied prohibitions by addressing sensitive topics such as the representation of women or corruption. For them, cinema became a tool of resistance, while also bringing them international recognition.

The lecture traces the main stages in the evolution of film production in Iran and analyses the thematic and aesthetic choices of Iranian filmmakers.
