synopsis

Tribute to Diane Keaton (1946 - 2025)

As he approaches his fortieth birthday, Alvy Singer takes stock of his life. A self-reflective look at his last relationship, Annie Hall, who has just left him, and a tribute to the city he loves — New York.

Visuel : Annie Hall

Positif

A movie about a man who is always looking for the loopholes in perfection. Who can turn everything into a joke, and wishes he couldn’t.

synopsis

Baxter, a New York insurance employee eager for a promotion, lends his apartment to his married and unfaithful boss. On Christmas Eve, he discovers one of his colleagues, who attempted suicide, in his bed…

Visuel : The Apartment

Omnibus

Diamond-sharp satire with a brilliant performance from Lemmon.

Time Out Film Guide

Wilder and Diamond’s screenplay is the foundation of this well-told tale. It makes masterly use of set-ups and payoffs, most of them encoded in props. The movie is a masterpiece, structure-wise and otherwise.

synopsis

Calvin and Beth Jarrett form an ideal couple of the American upper-middle class; their son swims and sings in the high school choir. Behind the façade of their comfortable home, the Jarrett family is on the brink of collapse…

Visuel : Ordinary People

synopsis

Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid are partners in all kinds of robberies. Mischievous outlaws, they roam early 1900s America, constantly thumbing their noses at the authorities…

Visuel : Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy was thoroughly modern, a star-making vehicle for Newman and Redford that reflected a need for the genre to turn the page and that feels as much of its time as it does authentic to Wyoming in the late 1890s. With Katharine Ross at the center of a love triangle between friends, the film attempted to bring Jules and Jim to the American mainstream, taking a lesson from the French new wave on how to revivify old Hollywood craft.

synopsis

Vertigo is a masterclass in cinema produced in 1958 by Alfred Hitchcock. Using San Francisco and its bay as a backdrop, he captures with extraordinary mastery the dreamlike and tortuous love story between Kim Novak and James Stewart, exploring the torments of desire and guilt.

Musical accompaniment

The musical accompaniment is provided by the Luxembourg Philharmonic, under the direction of Ben Palmer.

Vertigo

The Blues Brothers

One of the great American comedy films… It’s just a joy to watch even forty-three years on. John Belushi was never better as the lead. He’s funny just standing there.

For brilliantly executed slapstick comedy, wildly inventive car chases, unforgettable lines and a stonking blues soundtrack, you just can’t beat 'The Blues Brothers'.

synopsis

The numerous romantic escapades of Brad Allen, a composer and playboy, annoy his neighbor, Jan Morrow, an interior decorator who shares a party telephone line with him and overhears all his flirtatious conversations. After Jan, who has never seen Brad, unsuccessfully files a complaint against him, Brad decides to seduce her by pretending to be a sincere and honest Texan rancher…

It’s the perfect first-date movie: It’s flirty and romantic and a little bit saucy, but it leaves viewers with just a peck on the cheek at the end of the night.

The A.V. Club

Doris Day & Rock Hudson

The most exciting thing about it is that, under the surprisingly sophisticated direction of Michael Gordon, Rock Hudson undergoes the metamorphosis from stock leading man to one of the best light comedians in the business.

The Hollywood Reporter

The zippy title song and the match of Rock’s granite jaw with Doris’ equally solid hairstyle are as representative of 1959 mainstream style as finned cars and kidney-shaped coffee tables. Now, Doris Day’s films look smart again, and we can see that 'Sex And The City' or most Julia Roberts/Cameron Diaz movies basically rework the successful recipe of Day’s best vehicles.

synopsis

Abandoned by his own kind during an exploration mission on Earth, a little extraterrestrial takes refuge in a suburban home, where he is discovered by Elliott, a ten-year-old boy. Brought together through a telepathic connection, they soon become friends.

Benshi.fr

Seeing E.T. again reminds us of how much we've remained the same, how gratified we still are by a film that connects so beautifully to our sense of wonder and joy.

Duration :
137 minutes
Actors :
Louis Wolheim, Lewis Ayres, John Wray, Arnold Lucy, Ben Alexander
Awards :

Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque

synopsis

With a mind aflame with patriotic fervour and the glory of war, young idealist Paul Bäumer and his flag-waving classmates enlist in the German Army at the outset of World War I. The unripe, chest-thumping men set foot on the muddy battlefield, dreaming of performing heroic feats. Instead, only the horrors of war await the inexperienced brothers-in-arms. As the battle-scarred soldiers end up serving as cannon fodder, they are forced to witness the merciless extermination of their comrades.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Displaying technical brilliance – in particular the stupendous tracking shots over trenches where lines of infantry stand in wait – this doesn’t skimp on the misery either. It hammers home a distressingly realistic vision of the inanity of war. This deserves a place alongside Renoir’s 'La Grande llusion' and Kubrick’s 'Paths Of Glory' as one of the most effective pacifist arguments ever committed to celluloid.
