synopsis

A monumental masterpiece by Chen Kaige, this film stands as one of the defining achievements of mainland Chinese cinema. Leslie Cheung delivers the performance of a lifetime as a Peking Opera actor renowned for playing female roles, yet tragically unable to separate his art from reality. Through this profoundly moving character, Cheung fuses his own androgynous charisma with the unwavering devotion of a broken artist. His heartbreaking fate becomes the thread that guides the audience through fifty turbulent years of Chinese history, from the era of military rule to the Cultural Revolution.
